A Message from Dr. Michael E. Compton, Director of the School of Agriculture

Welcome to the School of Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville!

Now is a great time to pursue a career in agriculture and natural resources. A recent report from the Wisconsin Workforce Development Council estimated that there will be over 132,000 career positions available in agriculture and natural resources in this decade. About 43,000 of these positions will be created by increased demand for agriculture products and growth in the industry. About 68% (89,190) will be created by retirements or those leaving career positions. A report in the Wall Street Journal indicated that the greatest career opportunities will be in agricultural engineering technology and plant sciences (soil and crop sciences and environmental horticulture) in addition to the steady demand of professionals in animal and food science, agribusiness, agricultural education, and natural resources.

The faculty and staff at the School of Agriculture are dedicated to helping you achieve your professional goals. Our commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, research, and service to the agriculture industry at the state, regional, national and global levels makes us a leader in undergraduate education. We are able to accomplish this mission by adhering to our basic values of nurturing a diverse and supportive academic community; fostering a culture of leadership, collective vision, critical reflection, and public accountability; conducting quality research in agriculture and sustainable resource management; reaching out and serving our agriculture industry and community stakeholders; and securing the resources necessary to deliver outstanding educational opportunities in agriculture and natural resource management.

We offer majors in six academic programs with a student-centered, engaging curriculum that emphasizes individual and group learning and development of the intangible, technical, and professional skills necessary to begin your career in the agriculture industry or further your educational experience at the graduate level. We believe that student engagement and a multifaceted approach are necessary for you to achieve a deep understanding and true learning.

All of our programs offer outstanding leadership and experiential learning opportunities such as service learning, faculty-led international study, applied research, and internships with our industry and government partners. We support a variety of student organizations and judging teams that compete against their peers at other universities. We recognize that participation in these experiences encourages learning beyond the classroom, helping students develop and hone their leadership skills, build lasting relationships, and improve their ability to compete for professional career positions.

Thank you for your interest in agriculture and natural resources at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. I invite you to peruse our webpages to learn about the programs and opportunities offered by the School of Agriculture and how you can become an active part of our learning community.
