GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

State-supported graduate assistantships are available in all areas of graduate study. Graduate assistantships are intended to provide financial assistance and professional growth for students, and professional assistance to the university.

A graduate assistantship requires a student to provide 20 hours of professional responsibilities per week while enrolled in a minimum of nine semester hours of course work. Part-time assistantships for 10 hours a week are also available. Selection will be based primarily upon overall undergraduate scholastic achievement and potential for future professional growth.

A graduate assistantship currently pays up to $3,756.50 per semester ($7,513.00 per year). For out-of-state graduate assistants, out-of-state tuition may be waived and the students will be required to pay resident tuition only.

Aside from the salary, graduate students may also apply for health insurance provided at no cost through UW-Platteville. For questions regarding health coverage, please contact the Payroll Office at 608.342.1178.

If interested in becoming a graduate assistant, write a letter or e-mail addressed to the Department Chair of the Counseling Psychology Department, explaining primary areas of interest, past experiences, and what particular assistantships you would be interested in pursuing. Early application is encouraged. Any questions regarding application can be addressed to Jovan Hernandez at hernandezj@uwplatt.edu, 608.342.1871.

Some examples of assistantships that students have obtained in the past are:

  • Working one-on-one with a faculty member in the Counseling Psychology Department.
  • Working for University Counseling Services.
  • Working as a group facilitator at the Ropes and Challenge Course.
  • Working for Student Support Services.
  • Working in Academic Advising or the Office of Career Planning and Placement.
  • Working in the Center of Education of Young Adolescents (CEYA).
  • Working in the Registrar’s Office.
  • Working in UW-Platteville’s Visitor Center.

Non-Resident Tuition Reduction Award for Counseling Psychology Graduate Students:

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Non-Resident Tuition Award for Counseling Psychology Students is available to students based on the following criteria:

  1. The student is a degree seeking and/or special student enrolled in the Counseling Psychology Graduate Program.
  2. The student lives within the approved zip codes (make "zip codes" an active link that lists all of them).
  3. Availability of awards (based on a "first come, first served" system).

The tuition reduction offers half of the enrolled credits at the in-state rate, with the remaining half at the out-of-state rate. To maintain eligibility for this award, the student must maintain a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average, and carry from 1 to 13 graduate credits. Students must submit an approval card ("pink card") for each semester at the time of registration for classes. The card must be signed by the Counseling Psychology Program Chair for endorsement. If the student is inactive for an academic semester, he/she may not be eligible for the award the next semester. Further eligibility will be dependent upon the remaining number of awards available.

Other Financial Resources

Financial Support:

Educational loans and work-study loans are available to graduate students who are regular degree-seeking students enrolled at least half time. Students enrolled as “special students” are not eligible for financial aid. To be considered for the programs listed below, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Federal Perkins Loan

Need and funds available determine the amount of a loan. A loan is interest free while a student is enrolled at least half time. Thereafter, 5% interest is computed annually after a nine-month grace period for new borrowers.

Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan

The amount of a loan is determined by need. A loan is interest free while a student is enrolled at least half time. Thereafter, a variable interest rate (not to exceed 8.25%) is computed annually after a six-month grace period.

Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan

This loan is subject to the same terms and conditions as the Federal Stafford Loan up to the applicable Stafford limit. A loan will accrue interest while the student is enrolled in classes. Thereafter, a variable interest rate is computed annually after a six-month grace period.

Emergency Loans

Emergency loans are short-term loans made available through the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Foundation. These loans must be repaid within 30 days.

Veteran Benefits

Graduate students who are eligible for educational entitlement from the Veterans Administration or from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs should contact the certifying official in the School of Graduate Studies for information and certification.

Advanced Opportunity Grants

Students of color and disadvantaged students may apply for this grant to assist with payment of college costs. Consideration is based on academic potential and financial need.
