Course Description:    This is a study of the legal and ethical environment of business and its effects on business decisions. The course includes the substantive areas of contract law, tort, criminal law, government regulation, employment law, consumer protection, antitrust, environmental law and securities law. We will also examine the ethical implications of legal disputes in business.

Learning Outcomes

The central goal of BSAD 3130, The Legal Environment of Business, is to prepare managers for many of the legal issues they will face in their careers. The course will not make you a lawyer. It will alert you to many legal issues you will face and provide a better perspective on when a manager must consult a legal professional. You will learn the legal process, the most important substantive business legal principles, and the government regulatory process. Specifically, BSAD 3130 will do the following:

  • Introduce you to the legal environment which business faces
  • Identify the complexities of the legal system and its processes
  • Permit you to recognize common legal problems facing business
  • Enable you to communicate more effectively with attorneys and other legal professionals concerning legal matters
  • Help you better comprehend common government regulatory processes and issues

The material studied in The Legal Environment of Business will also provide a legal foundation to support your study in other areas of business administration. Many business topics are influenced by legal considerations. BSAD 3130, The Legal Environment of Business, is a prerequisite for the following UW-Platteville courses: BSAD 3140, Managerial Law, and BSAD 360, Government Regulation of Business.
