Do you want to make things better? In this session, you’ll learn how industrial engineers work every day to make processes better, whether this means less cost, fewer errors, higher quality, or faster. We’ll have a blast learning about processes by building Lego structures with a team.
Using Physics to Launch Marshmallows
How high and far can you launch a marshmallow? In this session we will build popsicle-stick catapults, and use physics to consider questions about them. What roles do the different materials in the catapult play? What launch angle will give your marshmallow the highest height or longest range? What factors affect your marshmallow’s time in the air? You’ll find out here.
Technology goes tiny! Machines smaller than the size of an ant? Building blocks made by atoms? In this session you will learn how this idea takes advantage of the unique properties of structures and materials down to nanometer scale, which is smaller than the size of a human hair. Scientists and engineers are working on the technology that may lead to the next industrial revolution—nanotechnology.
Did you know that chemistry affects your life every day? There are many different properties that chemists use, including density. Everything has density. In this session you will learn what density is and how to calculate it for various objects. Find out how important density is and how it impacts your life.
The Path Best Traveled
Have you ever wondered the best way to get to all of your classrooms at school so you aren’t late for each class? Have you ever wondered how the mail delivery is designed to most effectively get your mail to you? Mathematical networks can help us think about these types of problems. In this session you will traverse paths, sometimes trying not to cross over your previous steps and sometimes trying to make the most efficient route. Lots of possibilities for fun exist in exploring mathematical networks.
Don’t be the Weakest Link in the Supply Chain
Do you ever wonder how the products at the store get there? These products have first traveled the length of the supply chain to be available to us. In this section we will be exploring the different links in the supply chain. Will you be the forecaster, the planner, the purchaser, the scheduler, or the transporter? Don’t be the weakest link.
Do you have an artistic mind, but also a curiosity for science? In this session we will be learning about, as well as practicing drawing, plants, animals, and humans. People who pursue this field provide illustrations for
textboooks, manuals, and other publications. You will use your creative mind and communication skills to produce a unique drawing.
The Science of Dairy Products
There is lots of science that goes into making dairy products. In this session we will be exploring how to get the freshest milk at the farm as well as how to make the best cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. We will use equipment to test for antibiotics and bacterial load in fresh milk, investigate the process of pasteurization and separation, and delve into the art and science of making cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and butter. Yum!
