Biography

Dr. Laura Medisky is an oboist and Alexander Technique teacher based in Madison, WI, and has performed and taught across the United States and in South America. She is a founding member of the Madison-based wind quintet Black Marigold. An active solo and chamber music recitalist, Laura recently presented an artist recital at the International Double Reed Society conference in Tempe, AZ and made her Carnegie Hall debut in March 2011 for the MidAmerica Productions Series. She performs regularly with groups such as the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Madison Symphony, Rockford Symphony, Dubuque Symphony, Green Bay Symphony, La Crosse Symphony, and con vivo! Chamber Ensemble. Medisky serves on faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where she teaches Applied Oboe Lessons, Music Appreciation and is the Chamber Music Coordinator.

Medisky maintains an active private oboe studio in Madison, ranging in level from beginners to amateur adults, and is a regular oboe clinician for area public schools. She teaches oboe at various music festivals, including Festival Música das Esferas in Brazil, UW-Madison’s Summer Music Clinic, Pioneer Music Camp in Platteville, and Idyllwild Music Festival, and has led masterclasses and reed-making workshops in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Brazil. As an AmSAT certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, Laura offers private lessons and introductory workshops. She has presented Alexander Technique masterclasses at several institutions and festivals in North and South America, and has a special interest in working with musicians.

Laura holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, UCLA, and Arizona State University, and earned her Alexander Technique certification from the Urbana Center for the Alexander Technique under the direction of Joan and Alex Murray. Her principal oboe teachers include Nancy Ambrose King, Martin Schuring, Marion Kuszyk and Marc Fink, and she further studied with Alex Klein and Allan Vogel. Laura can be heard on the Centaur Records label on her debut solo CD, Personalities, 21st-century American Music for Oboe, released in April 2012.
