PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville hosted Ken Armstrong, co-author of the book, “Scoreboard, Baby,” on Oct. 10. The book, written by Armstrong and Nick Perry, chronicles the 2000 University of Washington Huskies football team, including its on-field accomplishments and off-field exploits of a few of its players.

“Scoreboard, Baby” is this year’s UW-Platteville Campus Read selection.

“The book is about choices and consequences,” said Armstrong. “What the book is not, is a condemnation of student athletes. If anything, Nick and I came away with a profound respect for student athletes and for all the work and dedication it takes to succeed in class and on the field.”

Armstrong was a guest in various classes throughout the day and concluded his visit with a presentation and book signing in Ullsvik Hall.

Armstrong was working at the Seattle Times newspaper when he and Perry were writing the book. They wrote a four-part series on the University of Washington football program, which provided the springboard for the book.

“With a book like this you have to confront all these tripwires that we typically work to avoid,” said Armstrong. “You’re talking about race. You’re talking about sexual assault and domestic violence. You’re talking about stereotypes and corrosive power of low expectations. You’re talking about ways in which we hurt one another and how we help one another.”

In 2009, Armstrong won the John Chancellor Award at Columbia University for lifetime achievement. He has also received the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting and the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 2011 for “Scoreboard, Baby.”
