Brian Quinn

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-Platteville student Brian Quinn, a junior computer science and business administration major from Kenosha, Wis., became an entrepreneur at the age of nine, starting his balloon entertainment business, Big Balloon Tycoon.

Quinn received his first balloon kit as a Christmas present from his parents and was immediately hooked. He first performed his balloon art in fifth grade during a school fundraiser. “I got phone calls from people who saw me and wanted me to perform for their event,” he said. “After that there was no turning back.”

As the business grew in size, Quinn recruited his younger brother, Michael, as a second balloon artist. The two perform at many events in the Kenosha area, including birthday parties, grand openings, festivals and company celebrations.

Quinn’s favorite service they provide is the creation of large balloon sculptures.  “There are no limits to this type of work and I never get bored,” he said. Some of the most memorable creations he has made are a bride and groom, Captain America and a 4-foot-tall Darth Vader. They also offer the traditional entertainment package where they create balloon sculptures upon request, and the stage shows, which are one half-hour long performance featuring a series of skits with dancing puppets, 8-foot-tall balloons and balloon twisting competitions.

Big Balloon Tycoon has led to many opportunities for Quinn outside of balloon entertainment. “The best part of this job is the relationships I have built,” he said. “I have been offered internships from people I met at birthday parties. People see past the balloon art and recognize that I am really dedicated to making this business successful.”
