Dominic Barraclough

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —University of Wisconsin-Platteville counseling psychology professor Dr. Dominic Barraclough has been selected as the new director of the School of Graduate Studies and Academic Projects. He replaces Dr. David Van Buren, who retired at the conclusion of the spring semester.

Barraclough has been responsible for teaching and supervising graduate courses in community counseling, school counseling and college student personnel. He has served on various university and college committees and was the program coordinator for the counseling education program for five years. He also developed a new emphasis in college student personnel.

The new position drew Barraclough’s interest for several reasons. “Graduate education has always been important to me,” he said, noting he first came to UW-Platteville to be involved with what was then the counselor education graduate program, the only program on campus strictly offered at the graduate level.

“David Van Buren had done such a great job being a steward of the graduate programs,” said Barraclough. “The programs, especially the distance education ones, have been quite entrepreneurial. The opportunity to support that is exciting.”

Barraclough is also looking forward to working with Dr. Mittie N. Den Herder, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and the other members of the Academic Affairs team.

“This new position will provide a welcome challenge,” he said. “It will offer a prime opportunity for me to learn and grow professionally.”

Moving forward, one of Barraclough’s major responsibilities will be to assist the Higher Learning Commission steering committee prepare for HLC accreditation in 2016-17.

Barraclough earned his bachelor’s in psychology in 1989 from the University of Washington, his master’s in counseling psychology in 1994 from Central Washington University and his Ph.D. in counseling psychology in 2000 from the University of North Dakota. He began his teaching career at UW-Platteville in 1999.
