PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — To kick off the 2013-14 academic year, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville music faculty will perform in the Faculty Gala on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. in the Brodbeck Concert Hall in the Center for the Arts.
This special concert combines the talents of the music department’s faculty who are renowned in their respective fields of specialization and are active performers in the tri-state area. It promises to be a memorable afternoon filled with musical solo performances, ensembles and unique collaborations.
Highlights of the concert include a vocal duet “Divas of a Certain Age,” a trumpet and organ duet, a bassoon trio, music for multiple-percussion, klezmer music and a work for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will close with a few pieces performed by Ensemble Nouvea, a UW-Platteville faculty ensemble featuring trumpet, horn, saxophone, tuba and percussion.
“This concert is a great way to get university students, faculty and staff, as well as community members, excited about making music,” said Dr. Thomas Dickey, director of orchestral activities at UW-Platteville. “It will expose them to types of music that they may not have an opportunity to hear on a regular basis, which will expand the depth of their musical experiences.”
The concert will kick start a larger faculty music series started by the UW-Platteville Department of Performing and Visual Arts this year. Future events include a recital in the fall by Kassia: Women in Song, a faculty vocal chamber ensemble that performs the works of female composers and poets. The ensemble was named for Kassia, a Byzantine abbess, poet, composer and hymnographer who lived in the 800s A.D. and is considered one of the first medieval composers. In the spring, the music faculty will perform a concert that pairs music of the Renaissance with modern music.
“UW-Platteville’s music faculty members recognize that cultural-aesthetic enrichment is a vital part of university life,” said Dickey. “One of our goals is to provide high-quality, instructional experiences through performances by faculty and guest artists, such as those who will perform at the Faculty Gala. We hope that many students, faculty, staff and community members will come to enjoy this musical experience. Our goal is to have this concert become an annual event.”
Tickets for the event are $5 and may be purchased in advance by calling the University Box Office at (608) 342-1298. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
