FFA members earn prestigious American Degree

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Fifteen students from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville have earned their American FFA Degree. The American FFA Degree is awarded to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA and made significant accomplishments in their supervised agricultural experiences.

Approximately 3,500 American FFA Degrees are handed out each year at the National FFA Convention. That number represents less than half of one percent of all FFA members, making it one of the organization’s highest honors.

In addition to their degree, recipients receive a gold American FFA Degree key.

The top American FFA Degree recipients from each state may also be nominated for a Star Award.

FFA members who qualify for the American FFA Degree have received a Greenhand FFA Degree, Chapter FFA Degree and State FFA Degree. They have been FFA members for at least three years, have completed at least three years of high school agriculture classes or two years of high school agriculture classes and one year of college agriculture classes. Members have graduated from high school one year prior to the National FFA Convention at which their degree will be awarded. They have maintained detailed supervised agricultural experience records, which demonstrate outstanding planning, managerial and financial skills. Members earned and productively invested at least $7,500, or have earned and productively invested at least $1,500 and worked 2,250 hours beyond scheduled school hours through their SAEs. They must also have a record of outstanding leadership skills and a record of participating in community service activities. Members must also maintain a “C” grade average or better.

This award was presented to the following:

  • Jordan Huber, a sophomore crop and soil science major from Adams Friendship, Wis.
  • Evan Henthorne, a sophomore animal science major form Adams Friendship, Wis.
  • Christopher Blank, a junior animal science major with an emphasis in meat and livestock science from Slinger, Wis.
  • Evan Pahl, a junior criminal justice major with a minor in biology from Hustisford, Wis.
  • Chaesta Shager, a sophomore animal science major from South Wayne, Wis.
  • Tyler VanderGalien, a sophomore animal science major with an emphasis in meat and livestock from Waupun, Wis.
  • Garrett Badtke, a sophomore soil and crop science major with a minor in agribusiness from Mt. Carroll, Ill.
  • Kimberly Durward, a sophomore agribusiness major with an emphasis in agriculture communications and marketing from Thomson, Ill.
  • Michael Long, a sophomore agribusiness major and a soil and crop science minor from Big Rock, Ill.
  • Kye Witek, a sophomore crop and soil science major from Steward, Ill.
  • Stefanie Newhouse, a senior animal science, vet medicine and mathematics major from Hudson, Iowa
  • Kayla Marks, a senior animal science major from Woodland, Calif.
  • Mikayla Horstman, a sophomore soil and crop science major from Bangor, Wis.
  • Samuel Kimpan, a sophomore electrical engineering major from Hinckley, Ill.
  • Mitchel Rahn, a sophomore agribusiness major with a minor in horticulture and entrepreneurship from Chadwick, Ill.
