PLATTEVILLE - Imagine a day to experience hands-on workshops about conservation, horticulture and soil and crop science while having fun. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville School of Agriculture will host a Career Exploration Day that will provide those experiences from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 18.

High school students and their teachers will attend the workshops with refreshments and lunch provided.

In the horticulture workshop, students will experiment with grafting, create floral arrangements to take home and learn how to propagate plants.

The environmental conservation workshop offers a tour of the Pioneer Farm to view conservation practices, sampling water from a stream and learning about plant groundcover.

Soil and crop science participants will explore fertilizers, insects and diseases, examine different soils, seeds and plants and learn the process of grading grain.

The event will help to continue to develop a relationship with high school teachers in Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois, wrote Jodi McDermott, Mike Compton, Tom Hunt and Roger Higgs, creators of the Exploration Day.

Assistance and support will be provided by the UWP Horticulture Club, Reclamation Club and Agronomy Club.

Funding for the program is provided in part by the UW-Platteville Foundation Opportunity Fund, which awarded nearly $45,000 for 15 grants this year.

The UWP Foundation initiated the fund program in 1998-99, and the total number of grants thus far is 86, with a total monetary value of $411,000.

For registration information, please call 608-342-1393, or register online on the UWP SOA website http://www.uwplatt.edu/soa/workshop/ .
