2002_09_20.jpgPLATTEVILLE-Break out the orange and blue, with the opening of the Pioneer Student Center, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville looks to create a new tradition of tailgating before home football games at the University.

"We've always done a student appreciation tailgate-like party each year, but it wasn't quite like this," said Douglas Stockli, director of UWP Retail Dining Services. "With the new Pioneer Student Center and its close proximity to the football stadium, we saw an opportunity to start a new tradition where students and alumni can come together before home games to have fun and cheer on the Pioneer football team."

The tailgate parties will be held in the south parking lot and on the south patio of the Pioneer Student Center with concessions provided by University Dining Services. Traditional tailgate-style food and refreshments will accompany live music and football enthusiasm.

"We'll have vendors set up on the patio selling brats, hamburgers, veggie burgers and Chicago-style hot dogs," Stockli said. "We'll also serve soft drinks, and until the Pioneer Haus microbrew beers are available, we'll have Great Dane beer for sale for those of legal drinking age."

The tailgate parties will begin two hours prior to every home football game and will conclude with the Marching Pioneers leading fans to the Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Football Stadium, about a half hour before each game.

The first tailgate party kicks off this weekend, at noon Saturday, Sept. 21 when the Pioneers take on the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College in Michigan. The Dubuque-based band Middle-Town will perform a variety of cover songs. In conjunction with the tailgate party, Student Appreciation Day will also be held. During the game, the University will give away three $500 scholarships, four $250 housing contracts and four certificates worth $200 of dining dollars. Also during the game, 500 Pioneer student appreciation t-shirts will be given away. UWP students are admitted free to the games with a valid student identification card.
