Dr. Matthew Roberts

PLATTEVILLE — Dr. Matthew Roberts joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2002 to teach structural engineering classes in the department of civil and environmental engineering. On July 1, he will begin a term serving as special assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Robert Cramer.

“I view this as a great opportunity to gain a broader understanding and appreciation for the challenges facing the administration of UW-Platteville,” said Roberts. “I would also hope that by serving in this position, I might be able to help decision makers better understand issues of concern to faculty.”

Roberts earned his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Brigham Young University and then served four years as a U.S. Air Force civil engineering officer in New Mexico and Texas. Upon separating from the Air Force, he completed his master’s and Ph.D. in civil engineering from Texas A&M University. While at UW-Platteville, Roberts has been involved in ABET accreditation, engineering education research funded by the National Science Foundation, and many other campus and community projects, such as running the EMS Expo Model Bridge Contest for middle and high school students.

Over the next one to three years, Roberts will work with partners within Administrative Services and across campus to help UW-Platteville move forward. Strategic plan implementation, Higher Learning Commission accreditation, and business process review and refinement are some of the projects on which Roberts will work.

“Dr. Roberts’ experiences and skills made him a good fit for the current needs of this position,” Cramer said. "He is very organized and detail oriented with the ability to see the larger picture of doing what is best for the students. Having a faculty member engaged in day-to-day activities in Administrative Services is very beneficial. I look forward to working with him.”

The current special assistant, Christina Curras, will be finishing her term at the end of June. In August, she will return to the civil and environmental engineering department to serve as department chair.

“I want to thank Dr. Curras for serving as special assistant for two years,” Cramer said. “She was instrumental in the development of the 2013-18 strategic plan, work with Huron to review operations, development of Rountree Commons and new shuttle system.”
