School of Education Student Teachers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Staff members in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville School of Education Clinical Experiences office made 247 student teaching placements during the 2012-13 academic year.

In addition to securing partnerships with area public schools for regular student teacher placements, this past year, the Clinical Experiences team placed 52 early childhood student teachers and 54 pre-student teachers in school districts throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Texas. The team placed 141 regular student teachers in 88 school districts in Wisconsin, 23 school districts in Illinois, two school districts in Colorado and one in Arizona. Office staff members also partnered with Donna Anderson, director of International Programs at UW-Platteville, and other staff members in the Education Abroad office, to place a student teacher in Ireland as well as New Zealand.

Overseeing the placement and supervision of all elementary, middle and secondary student teachers and select graduate student clinicals is just one of a myriad of responsibilities coordinated by the department, staffed by Kerry Hogan, director; Jessica Leibfried, program assistant; Desha Pick, administrative assistant; and Cody Koch, student worker.

Hogan said that in the two years he has served as director, they have hired new staff members who are passionate and energetic, worked hard to improve and streamline business practices and made required forms and handbooks available online for easy access.

“The School of Education is deeply committed to preparing the highest quality teacher candidates possible. In order to do this, we must provide them with exemplary clinical placements – very high impact practices out in the field, working with dynamic public school teachers, principals and counselors,” said Hogan.

Hogan noted that the office staff members have worked hard to establish and nurture very positive relationships with public schools throughout the Midwest that provide clinical placements for UW-Platteville students. “We have a very positive, nurturing, symbiotic relationship with each of the schools we work with and all of us in Clinical Experiences are very appreciative,” Hogan stated. “They are our partners. We could not do what we do without their help.”
