PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Starting in fall 2014, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Department of Residence Life will offer a gender inclusive housing option where returning students participating in the 2014-15 room selection can choose to have a mixed gender suite in Southwest Hall.

“Gender inclusive housing is designed to allow students to live as they are comfortable or how they identify by sharing space with men and women, if they desire,” said Linda Mulroy-Bowden, Director of Residence Life. “Our mission is to create and support welcoming and inclusive communities, and this is a positive addition in doing so.”

Constructed in 2006, Southwest Hall is home to 380 UW-Platteville students. Each of its 95 suites features four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a dining area with a kitchenette.

Although only upperclassmen will be able to take advantage of this option, the Department of Residence Life is planning to work with freshman students who identify as transgender and would like gender inclusive housing as well.

Southwest Hall will be the only residence hall to offer this option at UW-Platteville at this time, but that may change in upcoming years. “We will be evaluating this initiative after next year to determine the next steps to take,” said Mulroy-Bowden.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee already have gender inclusive housing in place, offering it for the first time this year, and there are a number of other UW System schools seeking to implement the initiative for fall 2014. “We are communicating with the residence life programs at UW-La Crosse and UW-Milwaukee and so far, they are not experiencing issues,” said Mulroy-Bowden. “Students are enjoying this option.”

The Department of Residence Life is looking to expand the resident options at UW-Platteville. “We are pleased to offer gender inclusive housing for students, and will continue to provide a variety of amenities and pricing tiers in our residence halls for students to choose from,” said Mulroy-Bowden.
