PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — On Oct. 5, the sportsman club’s pistol team at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville attended the inaugural Scholastic Pistol Program Southwest Tech Collegiate Invitational in Fennimore, Wis.

There were two pistol divisions at the competition: rimfire division which is performed with a .22 caliber pistol and centerfire division which is performed with a 9mm pistol. Of the four teams that shot at the invite, the UW-Platteville centerfire squad posted a first place finish with the rimfire squad coming in second.

There were 32 shooters at the invite, eight shooters being from UW-Platteville: four on the rimfire squad and four on the centerfire squad. Senior criminal justice major from Burlington, Wis., William Meinke; sophomore criminal justice major from Sun Prairie, Wis., Micah Darling; junior mechanical engineering major from Ramsey, Minn., Nicholas Loes; and freshman mechanical engineering major from Germantown, Wis., Steven Gerek, shot on the rimfire squad while junior criminal justice major from Geneva, Ill., Anders Langlo; senior mechanical engineering major from Stitzer, Wis., John Napp; junior criminal justice major from Downers Grove, Ill., Karl Fredriksen; and senior industrial technology management major and head coach from Monroe, Wis., Joe Pecora shot on the centerfire squad.

There are four stages to the competition, each stage consisting of five round, steel targets at various distances painted white with one plate designated as the stop plate. Each shooter had five timed runs to shoot the array as fast as possible in any order they chose as long as the stop plate was shot last. Out of the five runs, the best four are kept and recorded. If a shooter misses a plate and does not make it up, three seconds are added to the time with the max time being 30 seconds.

Overall, UW-Platteville had the top three finishers individually. Pecora won the entire match by 16 seconds and was also top shot on all four stages. Napp came in second, and Langlo placed third.

"I am very impressed with how our team finished,” said Pecora. “Winning the centerfire division and sweeping the top three places is quite an accomplishment for a relatively new team."

Because of the team’s top finishes, they will receive more than $7,000 which will be placed into their Midway USA account, and used to pay for ammunition and trips to future matches, such as the Collegiate Scholastic Pistol Program Nationals in Fort Benning, Ga., in March. Their next match is the inaugural dual match against the Southwest Tech Chargers on Saturday Oct. 26 at Southwest Tech. “It is a bragging rights match between our two schools with a huge traveling trophy,” said Pecora.
