PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Marcus Jackson, a University of Wisconsin Platteville senior mechanical engineering student, has received the Alliant Energy/Erroll B. Davis Jr. Academic Achievement Award. Given by Alliant Energy and the UW System, this award is a high honor for academic achievement and campus involvement.

Jackson grew up in Sacramento, Calif. He said he always knew that he didn’t want to go to school close to home. Before attending UW-Platteville, Jackson was enrolled at University of Alaska-Anchorage and Arizona State University. He was originally an aerospace engineering major, but decided that mechanical engineering inspired him to seek a broader education.

At UW-Platteville, Jackson has been on the men’s basketball team, a mentor for the Driven Students Program and works at Center-POINT. He has made it a personal goal to become involved on campus and to make other students feel at home at UW-Platteville.

“In college they always tell you just to get a degree, but to me it’s nice to be recognized academically and engaged on campus,” said Jackson. “I’ve really been able to make an impact on some students here.”

Jackson also stressed the importance of building relationships with faculty and staff. “All of the staff here have been really open and helpful,” said Jackson. “The relationships that I have built here and having been able to help others are invaluable, you can’t put a price tag on that.”

After he graduates in May of 2014 a postgraduate scholarship will be awarded to him as a part of the Alliant Energy/Erroll B. Davis Jr. Academic Achievement Award.

His drive for academic excellence and desire to help others won’t end in May. Jackson plans to go on to graduate school and eventually law school to specialize in patent law. “I really like working on new things and the cutting edge,” said Jackson.

“I’m very thankful not only for the award, but for those who have helped me,” said Jackson “The list is long; my dad, Robert Jackson, all the people I work with, all of my friends and my family.”
