Students’ research presented at international conference

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Two University of Wisconsin-Platteville students co-authored and contributed to a research project that was recently presented at the 10th annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology, in Montréal, Canada June 16-19. The event was attended by more than 1,200 industry professionals representing more than 35 countries.
Kevon Tabrizi, a senior biology major, with a minor in plastics processing technology, from Platteville, Wis., and Teng Yang, a junior industrial technology management major from Oshkosh, Wis., have been working on the project since last spring.
The project involves the use of lignin, wood byproduct, as a bio-mass additive in plastics materials. The success in such a process offers the potential of reducing pollutant plastic packaging in the environment. The idea was first presented to Dr. Majid Tabrizi, UW-Platteville industrial studies professor, by American Science and Technology, an engineering and research company headquartered in Chicago, Ill.
The students have been involved with the identification of proper processing conditions, investigation of the physical, chemical, mechanical and environmental behavior of the samples, and testing the use of lignin as an alternative to other additives that are typically used when making plastic.
“Lignin is natural, so it might be better for your health, whereas other additives could cause cancer or disease,” explained Kevon.
The project is led by Dr. Ali Manesh of American Science and Technology, who travels from Chicago to UW-Platteville regularly to work with the students.
“It is a very good chance to get involved and learn about something that not much is known about yet,” said Yang. “We are exploring something that is biodegradable and green, which is what we want for the future.”
Dr. Tabrizi commented on the value of the students’ opportunity to collaborate on the research project. “Today, the goal for education is not only the dissemination of knowledge. The goal is to develop, educate and encourage the students to flourish in the science of ingenuity and innovation,” he said.
The students are continuing their research on the project throughout the summer. Contingent on their results, they may continue their work into the fall semester.
