PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-Platteville students took third place in the safety division and fifth place in the quality division at the Associated Builders and Contractors National Student Construction Management Competition from Nov. 2 through Nov. 6. The competition was held in Las Vegas, Nev., where 21 schools from across the nation competed in events related to the building construction management field.

These students had six weeks to prepare a proposal for a medical office building in Orlando, Fla. “We spent at least 20 to 30 hours on the project every week leading up to the competition,” said Drew Dorman, senior building construction management major from McHenry, Ill.

The proposal included quality, safety, and project management plans as well as a construction estimate and schedule. They also had to consider the potential for extreme weather in Orlando and included a hurricane protection program and extensive personal protection program.

The students agree that their success reflects the building construction management (BCM) program at UW-Platteville. “We looked around the room and saw all the big name division I schools and said wow,” said Joseph Lake, junior building construction management, Fox Lake, Ill.

Placing third at the event is not only a benefit for the university, but for the competitors and other students in the building construction management program as well. Networking with national representatives from large contractors was among the ways students exposed themselves and UW-Platteville to the industry.

“It gives national exposure to our BCM program and should encourage employers to recruit our students,” said Ryan Novak, building construction management professor.

Novak predicts that their recent success will lead them to attend this event again in the future, but is most excited about the exposure that UW-Platteville and the business construction management program has received for its success.

UW-Platteville students who competed at the event include Dorman; Lake; Zach Yakaites, senior building construction management major, Fond du Lac, Wis.; David Radtke, senior building construction management major, Stevens Point, Wis.; and Matt VanDenHeuvel, sophomore building construction management major, De Pere, Wis.
