UW-Platteville to host Chinese Spring Festival Feb. 3

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Confucius Institute will host the Chinese New Year Spring Festival Feb. 3 from 1-4 p.m. in Velzy Commons in Ullsvik Hall. The festival celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year, one of the most important holidays in the Chinese culture.

“It is a time to gather with family, look forward to the returning spring and anticipate a prosperous and happy new year,” said Tricia Reuter, UW-Platteville Confucius Institute office manager. “We hope attendees will learn a little about Chinese culture and enjoy the fun activities and performances.”

New events this year will be the Madison Chinese Culture Association performing the Ribbon Dance “Celebration” and the Shanghai Yangge Dance, face-changing and Beijine Opera song by Annie Pang, singing by Shell Han, UW-Platteville Confucius Institute instructor and activity stations including rice ball making demonstrations, peddler drums, lantern riddles and calligraphy.

A dance troupe from Jilin University in China performed at last year's festival.

 

Returning events are the Lion Dance by the Zhong Yi Kung Fu Association Lion Dance Troupe, martial arts demonstrations and Folk Dance by Hua Mulan Chinese and World Fusion Dance Troupe.

Tickets are $5 per person and children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available at the University Box Office or at tickets.uwplatt.edu/public/.
