UW-Platteville ranks highest in participation in emergency text alert system.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville ranks highest among the UW System’s four-year campuses in student participation in the university’s emergency text alert system. According to a report released by the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, UW-Platteville nearly attains a 100 percent enrollment rate in the system.

UW-Platteville was the first school in the UW System to implement an automated registration process, through which students are automatically registered for the text notifications, called Pioneer Alerts, when they provide their cell phone number when registering for classes. After registration, they are provided with the opportunity to opt out of the system.

“I have said over and over that our people come first, whether they are students, faculty or staff. I'm proud that we are the first UW System school to adopt the mandatory registration for text alerts for our students,” said Chancellor Dennis J. Shields. “While we hope to never have such an emergency, we are prepared the best way we can in the event of one. In case of severe weather, fire or some other emergencies, alerting the UW-Platteville community in the quickest way possible is our utmost concern.”

UW-Platteville is one of only three UW System schools – along with the UW-Parkside and UW-Stevens Point campuses – that has more than 50 percent of students participating in a text alert system.

Initiated in fall 2012, Pioneer Alerts are used in the case of an emergency or event that requires prompt notification of the campus community. In addition to automatically registering students’ cell phones to receive text notifications, students’ e-mail addresses are also automatically registered for e-mail alerts.
