UW-Platteville's newest residence hall, Bridgeway Commons, to open this fall

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — As the fastest-growing university in the University of Wisconsin System, UW-Platteville is continually assessing the housing needs of its students as it moves to provide more options and different styles of living. In the fall of 2013, UW-Platteville and Residence Life will open Bridgeway Commons, a hall designed to consider student feedback, located adjacent to Southwest Hall and close to Engineering Hall. Home to approximately 440 students, Bridgeway Commons will feature two-bedroom suites where four people share a bathroom and a shower. It will also be home to the campus’ all-you-care-to-eat dining facility, located on the lower level.

“This building is going to be a wonderful addition to our fleet of residence halls and it provides some different options for students,” said Alisha Slowey, current resident director of Brockert Hall and future resident director of Bridgeway Commons. “I appreciate this opportunity to be a part of opening a new residence hall and feel confident in the Bridgeway staff and residents to create a unique and dynamic community.”

Bridgeway Commons will be air-conditioned and each suite will come fully furnished. Each floor will have a kitchen, lounge and laundry facilities. Students may also enjoy the services of a front desk, lobby areas, multipurpose rooms, a recreation room, a coffee shop and a fireplace. It will remain open to its residents throughout the academic breaks.

“With our new residence halls, we want to be able to offer something different,” said Linda Mulroy-Bowden, interim director of Residence Life. “We are continuing to assess what students want and use that to build upon what we already offer. We want our students to be successful and be a part of an inclusive and welcoming community.”

The UW-Platteville Healthy Living Interest Community will be located in Bridgeway Commons next year as a chance for students to learn about eating healthy and staying active as well as bettering their mental and emotional health.

“We will focus on wellness in all its forms. Students are in the driver’s seat and it's important that they use their college years to develop health habits that they will carry with them through out their life,” said Slowey. “It is our hope that with this learning interest community we will team up with other departments on campus to provide some unique experiences in which students can participate.”

As of the start of the fall 2013 semester, the all-you-care-to-eat dining facility, Platters, located in Glenview Commons, will close permanently and will be replaced with a new all-you-care-to-eat facility in Bridgeway Commons. It will work with meal plans as a one-swipe access and will also accept cash. Greenwood Avenue Market will remain open with an expanded menu in Glenview Commons. There is also discussion about repurposing the Platters area of Glenview Commons.

“Our goal is to provide food service that is fresh and customizable,” said Mike Ernst, director of Dining Services. “We want to know what students’ preferences are and to prepare food how they like it. Food will be made to order, giving students the opportunity to create their own entrees and watch as those entrees are made in front of them.”

The facility will feature several stations, including an expansive salad bar, an action station where students can choose items to have stir-fried, a pizza station, a grill station, and a station that will offer options similar to those that are currently offered at Du Jour in Pioneer Crossing in the Markee Pioneer Student Center.  A special section will also contain allergy-friendly options with lactose- and gluten-free products.

The main floor lobby of Bridgeway Commons will also be home to a Jamba Station, which will offer half of the menu of the Jamba Juice franchise for students. The station will also carry the grab-and-go Better, Fresher, Faster sandwiches, salads and other items that are currently offered at other Dining Services locations on campus. Both the Jamba Station and all-you-care-to-eat facility will be available to all students.

“Bridgeway Commons is an attractive option for students because it will be brand new and feature dining options that are very convenient,” said Mulroy-Bowden. “Each of our residence halls has something unique and different to offer, and students should be excited that they can choose a housing option that best fits their needs and preferences.”
