PLATTEVILLE-A freshman honor society at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville nearly doubled its membership and recently received recognition for the achievement from the National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta.

UWP's ALD Chapter won the council's Gold Award for its significant membership increase - 92 percent. The competition was for local chapters who showed a 50 percent or higher increase in membership.

"The chapter on your campus had an exceptional year," wrote national ALD headquarters executive director Glenda Earwood-Smith. "Chapter growth and achievement does not occur without exceptional leadership."

UWP's chapter also was awarded an honorable mention in the national annual web site competition, along with Auburn University, Ball State University, Baylor University, University of Illinois, Ohio State University and Youngstown (Ohio) State University.

The following criteria were reviewed: information for current and prospective members, accuracy, up-to-date current events, ease of navigation and overall design.

The UWP chapter will receive recognition on the national web site and be recognized at the leadership workshop in Indianapolis.

The society has initiated more than 650,000 gifted students and has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships.
