UWP Horticulture Team places third at national contest

PLATTEVILLE-The University of Wisconsin-Platteville floral evaluation team recently returned from the 62nd Annual National Floral Crop Quality Evaluation and Design Contest. The contest was held the April 2-4 at New Mexico State University.

All of the hard work and long hours the team had practiced have paid off. The team placed third overall and is the smallest school that competes in the contest. UWP has attended the National Floral Crop Evaluation and Design Contest for more than 20 years. This is the third time the team has placed in the top five and only the second time in the top three.

The team consisted of three members: Stephanie Alton, Katey Dimmlich and Lisa Breitsbecker. Alternate Leah Schultz and assistant coach Maggie Hinderman, as well as advisor Mike Compton, also attended the contest.

Alton, from Dixon, Ill., is currently a senior majoring in ornamental horticulture. She placed sixth in potted plants, 29th in cut flowers and 11th overall.

Dimmlich, from Scales Mounds, Ill., is currently a junior majoring in ornamental horticulture with an art minor. She placed 13th in potted plants, 10th in cut flowers and eight overall.

Breitsbecker, a senior from Lancaster is also majoring in ornamental horticulture. She placed 19th in potted plants, fifth in cut flowers and 14th overall.

Hinderman is currently a senior majoring in ornamental horticulture. She placed seventh in the professional category of floral design. In addition to competing, Hinderman, a native Benton, was responsible for organizing practices and the "Petal Pushers" fund raiser that contributes to the purchase of flowers and plants for practices.
