UWP to host international opportunities fair

PLATTEVILLE-In a mostly-rural area like southwest Wisconsin, exposing people to diverse cultures can be a challenge, but the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is meeting that challenge head on by hosting the "International Connections: Learn Your Way Around the World" fair.

The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, will be held in Heritage Hall - the upper lobby of the Pioneer Student Center. The entire University community, including students, faculty and staff, will be encouraged to attend this event which will provide specific information about international academic opportunities and estimated costs of participating in these study abroad and exchange programs.

"This is one of the first times that we will showcase both our programs available through the Study Abroad Institute and our one-to-one exchange programs in the same venue," said Barb Daus, special assistant to the chancellor and one of the organizers of the event. "The fair will include participation from all of the colleges and from student services."

Display booths set up by the colleges of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture (BILSA), Engineering, Mathematics and Science (EMS) and

Liberal Arts and Education (LAE), along with Study Abroad, International Student Services, financial aid and short-term international study opportunities will not only provide information about various programs, but will offer dessert items reflective of UWP's international partners.

"We thought not only would offering international foods be fun and draw more people, but it will give participants an opportunity to taste and partake in some of the foods from our partner countries," Daus said. "When one is planning on traveling abroad, one of the things you wonder is 'what kind of food will be available?' It's all part of learning about a new culture - the way people live, the foods they eat."

In addition to the dessert items offered at the booths, a variety of international cuisine will be available for purchase downstairs in the

Pioneer Crossing. Jim Mueller, director of UWP Dining Services, said a rouladen with spaetzel (beef rollup with noodles) will represent Germany, a zharkoye (beef and potato stew) will represent Russia, an arroz compollo (chicken with yellow rice) will represent Spain and a Chinese entrée will be available. The Pioneer Crossing will also feature entertainment during the fair.

Daus said the University hopes to hold an informational fair regarding UWP's international opportunities at the beginning of each semester. Students, faculty and staff members who attend the event will gain a better awareness of what international opportunities are offered through the University.

"If you look in the newspaper, it's obvious we're living in a global economy, so it's important for our students to have opportunities to interact with people from other cultures," Daus said. "Traveling abroad strengthens students' on-the-go problem-solving skills and critical analysis skills. These are characteristics employers are looking for in their employees. We're hoping this fair will be an effective way of getting the word out about international study opportunities and will result in increased participation."
