The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Police Department began as a security department in 1963 with two "watchmen" hired to conduct security checks and keep a watchful eye on the students. Supervision of the Security Department was provided by the Physical Plant Director.

The University Police Department did not formally become a police department until 1971 when security officers were granted police/arrest powers. In 1972 the department was moved from the Physical Plant, and began to report to the assistant chancellor for Business Affairs. While still referred to by many as campus security, the department formally changed its name to University Police in 1983.
