GAMING CONSOLES
Can I connect my game console?
Yes, you can. You need to make sure that you register your game console's ethernet address with ResNet. You can do so by following these directions.
WIRELESS ROUTERS
Can I have a wireless router in my room?
Students may have wireless routers in their room provided that they registerthem with ResNet at the ResNet office located in Royce 122. Students will needto bring their wireless router with them to the office, including the powercable. The ResNet staff will then help you secure your wireless connection.The student is responsible for all traffic on their wireless router
STUDENT-RUN SERVERS
Can I run a web server/FTP server?
Student-run services such as web servers, FTP servers, DHCP server, etc. are not allowed on the network. This is against the campus Acceptable Use policy. Violations of this policy may result in loss of your connection.
BROKEN PORTS
My port is broken. What do I do?
If you notice your port is broken when you move into your room, call ResNet right away at x1990 and report it. Occasionally a port will be broken and not reported. In these cases, you will not be charged if it was damaged prior to your move in. If you or someone else damages the data port during furniture moving or by some other means, call us to have it repaired. A $15 charge will be applied to your bill for the damage. Do not, under any circumstances, try to fix the port yourself or use objects such as screwdrivers, pliers, etc. on theport.
DOWNLOADING MEDIA
Is it okay to download music, videos, etc?
Students may download music, videos, and other files as long as they are legallyallowed to with such services as iTunes or other pay services. Downloading copyrighted files through peer to peer applications such as eDonkey, iMesh, Limewire, Bearshare, KaZaa, BitTorrent is not allowed if the copyright owner hasauthorized their download. We do receive notices from entities such as the RIAAwhen these type of copyrighted files are found on the network. The University is legally bound to investigate and take action upon being served notice by outside agencies with regards to copyrighted files.We discourage students from illegal downloading not only because of the legal ramifications, but also because peer to peer (P2P) applications are also used quite frequently by people to spread viruses and worms to computer users throughdownloaded files. P2P traffic also consumes a significantly high amount of bandwidth on campus, which causes the network response time to slow down substantially. P2P applications themselves are not illegal. However the uses ofthe applications quite often lend themselves to downloading illegal files.
STUDENT DISCOUNT SOFTWARE
Can I get software at a discounted price as a student?
As a student of UW-Platteville, you are entitled to software purchasing throughWISC (Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog). WISC provides various software titles for purchase by UW students, faculty/staff and departments at discounted prices. As a student you will need to login to the WISC website. You will need to enter your Student ID number in order to verify that you are authorized to purchase software. If you have any questions, please contact ResNet.
PASSWORD RESET
My password isn't working. What do I do?
When you receive your initial password, you should log in and change it immediately. When passwords are issued, they temporary passwords that allowyou to enter the system long enough to set a password that you'll remember. We encourage students/staff to use the password self-service to set their challenge and response questions, so that they may reset their own password at any time. If you have not done this and need your password reset, you need to bring your student ID to the ResNet office in Royce Hall and we can reset your password. We are not allowed to resetpasswords over the phone or without an ID.
ON-LINE GAMES RUNNING SLOW
When I'm playing [insert on-line game name here], it's slow. How come?
All network traffic on the UW-Platteville campus is "shaped" to provide resourcesnecessary to make sure the business of the University can be completed. A device,referred to as the UWP Packet Shaperis used to do this. There is a limited amount of bandwidth left over for use after business used protocols are given prioritized. What remains is availablefor general use. We have found that in the residence halls, the problem of highlatency for on-line games can often be attributed to those individuals who are using P2P applications for downloading files. P2P application traffic tends to take presidence over UDP packets (game packets).
SPYWARE PROTECTION
How do I keep spyware off of my computer?
There are several things that you can do to try to avoid getting spyware on yourcomputer. We do highly recommend that you install a anti-spyware software packageto assist you with keeping your computer clean. There are several packages available. The packages that are quite frequently used are Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE,Spybot Search and Destroy and Microsoft Anti-Spyware. You can download Ad-Awareand Spybot from UWP software download page or www.download.com.You may have to use more than one program to clean up the spyware from your computer. Make sure you check for updates for these programs as they will be updated by the company to catch spyware that has recently been discovered.To keep spyware from your computer; do not install P2P file sharing applications,free screensaver programs, visit porn sites, click on links in any pop-up windows,pop up windows in IE that say problems were found on your computer. If you haveWindows XP, use the Windows Firewall. Install Windows Critical updates on a regular basis. If your computer seems to slow down, check for spyware.
ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
Do I need anti-virus software on my computer?
Yes. You should definitely have anit-virus software installed on your computer. Make sure you keep your anti-virus software updated. UW-Platteville provides Symantec AntiVirus to students, free of charge, as a student of UWP. You can download Symantec AntiVirus from the UWP software download page. Depending on the virus, substantial damage can be done to your computer. It's your responsibility to have anti-virus software on your computer and keep it updated.
