Freshman and transfer student criteria

  • U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident of the U.S.
  • Admitted to the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science
  • Registered as a full-time student
  • Incoming Freshmen: ACT score of 22 or higher, high school rank of 75 percent or above, or high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale. An official high school transcript is required
  • Transfer students: cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale from the transfer institution. An official transcript is required.
  • Students must demonstrate financial need. FAFSA forms must be completed and sent to UW-Platteville
  • One letter of recommendation from a science, technology, engineering or mathematics professional (e.g. teacher, work supervisor, etc. The letter should address academic aptitude, motivation, leadership qualities, time management skills, service learning , and/or memberships).
  • Completion of the application form on the website.

Continuing STEM Scholar criteria

  • In good standing in EMS
  • Students must demonstrate financial need. FAFSA forms must be completed and sent to UW-Platteville
  • Registered as a full-time student
  • In good standing with the STEM Scholars program
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at UW-Platteville
  • An updated copy of student's résumé

Student Responsibilities

  • Attend a STEM Scholar orientation prior to classes starting
  • Establish academic and non-academic goals at the beginning of each year
  • Provide a written goal assessment at the end of the year
  • Be involved in a peer mentor program
  • Join at least one student organization, either within their STEM discipline or in some other area of interest such as athletics, fine arts, etc.
  • Participate in Professional Developments
  • Give 10 hours of service in the first year and 15 hours of service in subsequent years.
  • Attend at least one Career Fair each year. Arrange at least two job-shadow days within the four years
  • Attend programs on résumé and application letter writing, and job interviewing within the four years
  • Explore study abroad or undertaking an independent study, internship, or an undergraduate research project
