Sustainable Transportation

UW-Platteville encourages the use of sustainable transportation options with the goal of helping to reduce the impact of students, staff, and visitors on the environment. A variety of steps can be taken to help promote sustainability, especially in the area of transportation. Consider the following options as alternatives to driving a gas-fueled vehicle alone to campus on a regular basis.

Carpooling

For students or faculty who travel to campus on a regular basis, consider carpooling as an option for commuting. Carpooling saves money for the participants by sharing the costs for gas and a parking permit, and will help reduce the carbon footprint of those traveling to campus. Carpooling also has the added benefit of reducing the number of vehicles traveling to campus each day which will help to decrease parking and traffic congestion on campus.

Carpoolers do not have to originate from the same location – perhaps you pass by the house of a classmate or coworker each day on your commute and could simply stop to pick them up instead of driving separately.

Zimride

Beginning in the fall of 2012 UW-Platteville will be utilizing an online rideshare board managed by Zimride. Zimride will provide an easy and convenient way for UW-Platteville students traveling to or from the same destination (such as when traveling home for the weekend) to find someone to share the ride with. Go to zimride.uwplatt.edu to sign up.

Biking and Walking

For students and staff living in the City of Platteville, walking or biking when traveling to and from campus or other destinations within the city is a great way to reduce your environmental impact. Biking or walking will save you money that would otherwise be spent on gas and wear and tear on a vehicle each day to travel only a short distance. It also provides an opportunity to improve your health through regular physical exercise.

More information on resources available to bicyclists and pedestrians is available on the bicycling page.

City-Campus Shuttle Service

In the fall of 2012 UW-Platteville will begin offering a shuttle service free for student use. The shuttle will provide a way to get from campus to the downtown area and other key locations without needing a personal vehicle.
