biography

Bruce has been a ceramic sculptor in Mineral Point, Wis., since finishing an MFA at Arizona State University in 1976. In the past 34 years he has produced and installed major works of freestanding or wall-mounted sculpture in both indoor and outdoor settings in several states. For the last 15 years he has installed one to six commissions a year.

Bruce's largest installation is fifty-two feet wide and took nine tons of clay to create. Smaller works up to twenty-eight feet were made for public, commercial and residential wall hangings or for mortaring within stucco or brick walls.

Each of Bruce's commissioned works is unique not only in esthetic concept but also in the engineering required for installation. He has designed works to fit enormous concave surfaces and to wrap around building corners. In Sportsman’s Park, Bruce worked with Chicago masons to lay up their mural like brick. At Menasha, Wis., a mural was glued and jointed on twelve 8’ x 10’ concrete panels then lifted into place with a crane and bolted to a brick wall. For a Brighton, Colorado installation he glued 745 pieces to 22 wood panels that were then wall mounted to steel studs. In some cases the works were designed so that they could be disassembled and moved to another setting at a later date.

Bruce's clients have included Rider Transit Concord, NC; John Deere & Co.; McDonalds Corp.; Epley Airport Omaha, Neb.; the City of Brighton, Colo.; Peru State College in Peru, Neb.; TDS MetroCom in Madison, Wis.; University of Wisconsin Hospitals; City of Menasha, Wis.; American Family Insurance; Iowa Beef Producers; and Sportsman’ Racetrack in Cicero, Ill.; among many others.

Bruce has also spent 25 years restoring an 1830’s stone building as my studio/gallery and in the process have become adept with the materials, tools and engineering required for quality building construction.
