What to expect FROM your writing appointment
The Writing Center schedules 30 or 60 minute sessions, depending on the length of the paper and topic of discussion. Guided by your requests, your tutor will respond, as a critical reader and peer, to what you’ve written — pointing out sections that work well, identifying possible problems, teaching you important principles about writing, and helping you find ways to effectively reflect and revise your paper.
To help make the most of your tutoring session, we ask that you bring your writing prompt or assignment sheet and be prepared with specific questions about the assignment or your writing in general.
The Writing Center tutor will likely concentrate higher-level concerns first, making sure you're responding to the assignment and that you're writing a focused, well-organized, and developed paper before they help with concerns such as style, grammar, word choice, and punctuation. Rather than simply proofreading or editing your paper, our goal is to help guide you through the writing process and encourage you to become a more independent thinker and writer.
